Model United Nations

This year, I joined the Model United Nations. The only difference from last year’s MUN is that I join in the advanced class, which includes experienced debaters. Initially, I was terrified. Not only because of the new, competitive environment, but also because of my fear of failure, and worse, humiliation.

However, I took a chance when joining RENMUN X with my friend as a double delegate. To me, this was a leap in the dark — an opportunity feeding my fear of failure and ultimately, embarrassment. However, after participating in RENMUN and engaging in the weekly MUN sessions, I’ve come to realise the importance of “diving in feet first” (approaching a task with little to no hesitation). Not only will this allow me to engage in more opportunities, but also confront my fears of failure through simply approaching the task before I overthink the decision. Furthermore, the encouraging environment in MUN makes it easy to learn and participate in discussions in debates.

Overall, Model United Nations taught me a valuable lesson through the method to confront my fears of failure, and addressed my hesitations through encouraging me to participate and creating a non-judgemental learning environment.
