World Scholar’s Cup

Participating in the World Scholar’s Cup has been an unforgettable experience, from writing activities, to competitive debates, to winning 3rd place in the Junior Division out of about 100 teams. This event has created a community of alpaca-loving participants, all of which explore various topics from astrology, to the history of fire. These diverse subjects test critical thinking and research skills, and though I was nervous to begin with, I learnt many skills and had fun.

One of the skills I learnt during the competition was teamwork. Working with two other peers during the Scholar’s Bowl, Collaborative Writing, and Team Debates has taught me to communicate opinions and ideas effectively and play to each of our strengths. For instance, during the Team Debate, each of us volunteered for the speaker role that suited us best. Specifically, one of the team members was first speaker due to the experience in MUN and public speaking. I was second speaker as I had experience in MUN and debate, being able to switch between rebuttal and delivering points. Lastly, one team member was talented in delivering rebuttal and had the most debate experience. The effective communication, acknowledgement of strengths and weaknesses, and delegation of speaker roles allowed us to win most of our debates.

Reflecting on this experience, the World Scholar’s Cup allowed me to learn more about the topics provided, sharpen my research and writing skills, and develop teamwork. I look forward to continuing my personal growth long after this event has ended.
