Back To School Night Volunteer
Through the Service Ambassadors, I volunteered for Back To School Night. The weather was incredibly hot, however despite the discomfort, I committed to my role as a volunteer: guiding parents to classrooms and answering questions. The heat was unpleasant, but looking at my friends gritting through it, I was reminded that sometimes helping others means pushing through discomforts and putting others first.
One memorable experience from this event was when a parent approached me, only speaking Chinese. At first, I panicked. Chinese is not my first language, and I wasn’t confident in my ability to effectively communicate. However, my friend didn’t know how to speak Chinese, and I needed to adapt to the situation. Therefore, I had to trust myself, and tried my best to answer their questions. Although I slightly panicked, the parent’s questions were answered and they were directed to their location. this moment showed me the importance of flexibility and resilience, especially in a moment of agitation.
Volunteering at the Back to School Night event showed me that resilience adaptability (including keeping calm) is found in challenging situations. Altogether, the event was successful due to the patience and kindness of all the teachers, parents, and Service Ambassadors!
