Volunteering backstage for the Trashion event at RCHK and helping with setting up and packing up was an experience that taught me about sustainability and teamwork. Setting up the stage and organising materials made me appreciate the effort behind organising a massive event with reputation of sustainability.
The work of setting up and packing up was laborious and exhausting. It required teamwork, patience, and attention to detail. For instance, if a board for the platforms of the stage went missing, a model could potentially trip. In essence, the volunteering work was difficult, hard on my back, and tests everyone’s patience. However, despite bustling around and the tiring work, I learned to stay organised and adapt quickly to last-minute changes, which were surprisingly common. This experience taught me the importance of behind-the-scenes roles that are often overlooked, but essential to the success of the event.
For me personally, it was inspiring to see how much effort goes into all of these events, and how unwanted materials could be transformed into art, from planning and setting up, to designing the outfits and organising models. Volunteering for backstage support allowed me to see and experience first hand the organisation of a legacy club and how backstage recruits are a necessity in shows.
